HOUSTON – The Texans signed defensive end Solomon Byrd to the practice squad after he cleared waivers, per a league sources.

Byrd is a former Texans seventh-round draft pick from USC. He played in one game last season and recorded two tackles and one quarterback hit.

A Wyoming transfer, Byrd finished his career at USC where he was an honorable-mention All-Pac-12 selection. He led the team with 11 tackles for losses and finished third in the nation with four forced fumbles. He had 49 tackles and six sacks last season.

Byrd has recorded a 32-inch vertical leap and a 9-6 broad jump.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pounder from Palmdale, Calif., recorded four sacks, 28 tackles and 7 1/2 for losses in 2022 with two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Speed worked out for the Texans previously before being signed to the practice squad initially.

Speed, 26, is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound former Patriots sixth round draft pick.

He has also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns.

Speed won a national championship at Georgia.

In the NFL, Speed has 11 career tackles. He has primarily played on special teams.
