HOUSTON – The Texans are reuniting with veteran free agent cornerback-special teams ace Tremon Smith on a two-year contract with a maximum value of $7.5 million with $4.5 million guaranteed, per a league source.

Smith is now the highest paid core special-teamer in the NFL.

Smith, 28, was previously with the Texans and now he’s back as a key part of special teams coordinator Frank Ross’ punt and kickoff units.

Smith is represented by Matt Glose of Generation Sports Group.

Smith previously signed a two-year, $5.5 million maximum value deal with the Denver Broncos in 2023.

The Texans negotiated with Smith that year and attempted to hold onto him, per sources, but, ultimately, he chose the playing time opportunity that the Broncos presented along with a strong contract.

Smith recorded a combined two interceptions, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and a kickoff return for a touchdown for Houston, is one of the fastest players on the Texans’ roster with 4.33 speed in the 40-yard dash.

He intercepted Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott twice in 2022 for the Texans and recorded a career-high 10 tackles with one forced fumble against the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

For his career, Smith has recorded 62 tackles, two interceptions and five passes defensed.

He played in every game the past two seasons for the Broncos with no starts. Smith had four tackles last season and five tackles in 2023.

He averaged 28.3 yards per kickoff return last season, a career-high.
