Rice Owls open Spring football camp

Spring Game is set for April 13 at 5 p.m.

HOUSTON – Spring Football has returned across the country and the Rice Owls are off and running opening their spring camp on their grass practice fields Monday on campus.

Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren is excited about getting back to work and expects the players to continue to raise the bar. This fall the Owls return 9 starters including 8 on the offensive side of the ball.

While the Owls opened spring camp Monday it will last several weeks. Rice will get in 15 workouts around next week’s Spring break and it will lead to their Blue-Gray Spring Game set for April 13 at Rice Stadium as part of the Owls’ annual Blue-Gray Weekend. The Owls will hold three opening practices prior to Rice’s Spring Break (March 9-16), and then return to the practice field again on March 18.

They will practice each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until the week of the Blue-Gray game.Bloomgren’s Owls are coming off a second consecutive bowl season and will welcome back 10 starters on defense and eight on offense in addition to leading rusher Dean Connors.

Rice will open the 2024 season on August 31 by hosting Sam Houston, the first of three consecutive games in the city of Houston. Rice will host Texas Southern on September 7 and then take on cross-town rival Houston in the Bayou Bucket Classic presented by HEB on September 14.
