HOUSTON – Martin Maldonado is trading in Texas BBQ for Chicago deep-dish pizza after signing a one-year deal with the White Sox on Friday.
The deal is worth $4.25 million and includes a club option for 2025 which includes a $250,000 buyout.
According to MLB.com, White Sox infielder Zach Remillard was designated for assignment to make room for Maldonado on the 40-man roster.
Maldonado, 37, spent the last six seasons with the Astros. The veteran catcher has a career .207/.282/.349 line with a 72 OPS+ across 13 seasons with five MLB teams.
After Maldonado’s departure, Yanier Diaz and Victor Caratini will handle catching duties for the Astros this 2024 season, MLB.com reported.
