HOUSTON – THIS DAILY is for all my relatives who didn't live to see their Cubs win much of anything. MY MOM and her twin brother Max. My Dad and my grandpa and grandma. For my kids grandma in ILLINOIS who watched until almost midnight as her Cubs did it. Finally.
For all the years my pals and I ROOTED for guys like BOB RUSH, HARRY CHITI, HANK SAUER, "HANDSOME" RANSOM JACKSON, and countless others who labored in the friendly confines. How about this one for ERNIE, BILLY, and Ron.
I picked up a buddy who had spent 2 tours in Vietnam. He wanted to go straight to Wrigley Field. We did and the Cubs were horrible that day. It didn't matter. We sat in the bleachers, drank warm beer, and ate cold hotdogs. Just being there was enough. We knew the Cubs weren't going to win anything but it sure was fun rooting for them.Last night was the typical torture a Cubs fan has been put through their whole life. Except they won.
That was un-Cubs like. But like the warm beer it sure was fun.
Now that they finally have done it will it ever be the same again? I think an Astros-Cubs series would be my next big quest. Just make sure it goes 7 games and has an extra inning rain delay in game 7. And tell the pitchers to just THROW STRIKES.
