"There comes a time in every athlete's career when their ambition and their body are no longer on the same page. I've reached that point," Foster wrote.
He goes on to write that he would've love to retire as Super Bowl MVP, but that he's fortunate to walk away from a beautiful and violent game.
"Unfortunately, life has other plans and they're usually opposite the imagination. But that imagination got me this far and I could not be prouder of the things my teammates and I accomplished in this game," Foster wrote.
Foster, 30, played in Houston from 2009-2015. He joined the Dolphins in the offseason.
He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection, led the NFL in rushing and touchdowns in 2010, and again led the NFL in touchdowns in 2012.
Foster is the Texans all-time leading rusher (6,472) and holds the team record for most career rushing touchdowns (54), most rushing yards in a single season (1,616) and most rushing TDs in a single season (16).
He finishes with 6,529 yards rushing with 54 rushing TDs and 14 receiving TDs.
