The 22-year-old San Francisco native is the son of Team U.S.A. men's foil coach Greg Massialas, himself a three-time Olympian fencer.

He made his Olympic debut in 2012 as the youngest man on the U.S. Olympic team at age 18. In London, the foil team finished fourth while Massialas placed 13th in the individual competition.

He's also appeared at the Senior World Championships six times, most recently finishing second overall in the individual competition in 2015. That made him the first American foil fencer to win a silver medal at Worlds.

The Stanford student took a year off from school to train for Rio and will return to school this fall to continue his studies in mechanical engineering.
Timur Saffin of Russia took the bronze.
