Astros sign Cuban IF Yulieski Gurriel to 5-year, $47.5 million deal

HOUSTON – The Astros have agreed to terms with Cuban third baseman Yulieski Gurriel to a five-year $47.5 million deal, according to media reports.

Gurriel, 32, also talked with multiple other teams around the league since becoming an MLB free agent on June 13.

Gurriel defected from Cuba after the Caribbean Series in February, along with his younger brother, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., 22, who is also a baseball prospect.

Yulieski can play second and third base, and some believe he will be ready to join the team in as little as three weeks.
