Sugar Land's Simone Manuel hopes to punch ticket to Rio in upcoming races

OMAHA, Nebraska – Sugar Land's Simone Manuel was back to work in the pool early Thursday morning.

She just missed out on a chance to head to Rio in the 200m Free Wednesday night.

The good news, though, is that she's got a couple more chances, and these are her better races.

Thursday morning's heat included the 100m freestyle, which Manuel finished in a top spot.

And her time was pretty good, just under 54 seconds.

She does have some pretty tough competition ahead, but Manuel is on to the semifinals, which happens Thursday night.

Manuel tells us she's feeling confident and likes her chances at going to the games.

"The race was a little tough, just coming off the 200 last night, but I'm pretty happy with getting under 54 seconds. I'm pretty excited, I have a lot of speed so hopefully I can bring it back the second. There's not too much pressure," Manuel said. "I think I put enough pressure just with the expectations that I have. I'm really excited. I have a great support system behind me so hopefully that can bring it home."

Manuel's race will take place Thursday night.

Another big one, though, is the 200-Fly for the women.

Local favorite, Cammile Adams, is in the finals.
