HOUSTON – Former Texans offensive lineman Eric Winston will donate his brain to the Concussion Legacy Foundation for CTE research after he dies.

Winston made the decision to have his brain examined because he said he wants to be a part of the process of helping the next generation of athletes understand the risks involved with head trauma and also help improve the treatment and prevention of head injuries.

Winston made headlines this season after he bashed the St. Louis Rams for failing to uphold the NFL's concussion protocol when quarterback Case Keenum (a former UH and Houston Texans quarterback) struggled to stand up after a hard hit to the head. The Rams sent Keenum back out for a potential game-winning drive after he showed clear signs of a concussion.

Winston said it's important to continue researching head injuries in order to protect future and current players.

Winston was drafted by the Texans in the 3rd round of the 2006 draft. His last season in Houston resulted in the franchise's first playoff appearance and win.

He spent six of his 10 professional seasons in Houston, starting 87 out of 96 possible regular-season games, and he has been the president of the NFL Players Association since 2014.
