Katy High School football named national champions

KATY, Texas – Katy High School football championship T-shirts sold fast Monday afternoon as soon as they were taken out of the boxes.

The Tigers team won the state championship and then found out Monday they were ranked National Champions by MaxPreps.

"It just goes to show that all the hard work that we put in, staring in January. You know we started in January, 11 months just grinding and we just preached just finishing it off this year because the last two years we weren't successful and that really hurt so we used that as motivation," Defensive back Travis Whitlock said.

Gary Joseph has been coaching for Katy High School for 34 years.

"They've lost the last two years and just the sting of losing, people really don't know the hurt you feel and the sting of it and there are kids that had to go through it two years in a row. For them to finally get the exhilaration and winning one, it was well, well worth it," Joseph said.

Over the weekend, Katy dominated Lake Travis at NRG Stadium. The momentum this team has right now is contagious.

"Super excited. Everywhere we go people are stopping us and telling us congratulations and honking their horn on the highway, so it's a great feeling," running back Kyle Porter said.

The players we spoke with said they thank their coaches and the staff at Katy High for their support and pushing them to this point.

Championship T-Shirts can be purchased at Katy High school from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the field house on campus.
