Houston listed as one of the most cursed sports cities

HOUSTON – According to The Upshot in association with the New York Times, Houston is one of 13 "cursed" sports cities.

The last time any of the big three professional Houston sports teams brought home a championship was in 1995 when the Houston Rockets won their second NBA championship. The team won its first title in the 1993-1994 season.

Before the Rockets, the city's hockey team, the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association, won back-to-back titles in 1974 and 1975. When the Aeros resurfaced in the International Hockey League, they won the Turner Cup in 1999 and the Calder Cup in 2003.

The Houston Astros had several successful years in the late 1990s and in 2001, but they couldn't make it past the first round of the postseason. The Astros finally made their first appearance in the World Series in 2005, but lost all four games against the Chicago White Sox.

Despite successful regular seasons, the Houston Oilers, now the Tennessee Titans, never made it to the Super Bowl. Our current NFL team, the Houston Texans, have been AFC South champions twice.

Though they didn't receive as much fanfare as a win in the NBA Finals, Super Bowl or the World Series would, Houston also celebrated professional soccer and women's basketball championships as recently as 2007.

Houston's now defunct WNBA team, the Houston Comets, won four consecutive championships from 1997 to 2000.

The San Jose Earthquakes relocated to Houston and became the Houston Dynamo and won back-to-back MLS championships in 2006 and 2007.
