Houston Newsmakers March 1: Chris Bell for mayor? Slavery & Christianity, the Rodeo

HOUSTONFormer Houston city council member and congressman Chris Bell has announced he is running for mayor of Houston.

Bell said one of his top priorities would be to fix Houston's streets.

"Build your army, get your people in place, divide the city and conquer and fill up the potholes," he said. "And then also report that information, put it up on line so there will be complete transparency so folks can track it."

Bell said his losses the last couple of times he ran for election for governor and Congress are not a negative but an indication that he is a public servant willing to serve.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo starts this week!

Joe Bruce Hancock has been General Manger of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for seven years. His GM service coming after 25 years as a volunteer.

Millions will be raised for scholarships from the thousands who will attend.

Hancock said those who will be riding the Rodeo rides should have nothing to fear.

"The maintenance that we do is above and beyond," he said. "We have a vendor who comes in and is actually our representative to make sure those rides are all up to speed, and we hire a consultant who checks daily and if anything's out of the ordinary that ride doesn't go up."

How slavery affected Christianity

Rev. Dana Carson, Ph.D. is pastor of the Reflections of Christ's Kingdom Church (The R.O.C.K.).

In addition to ministry Carson has written nearly 100 books. The latest offering is "The Trilogy," which delves into the impacts of slavery on Christianity and the Black Church. He said racial progress among churches lags behind secular society.

Newsmakers Extra: Slavery's Impact On Christianity & The Black Church

"When we had this movement of multiculturalism and diversity training in secular organizations, government and so forth, we didn't have that in church," he said. "So in church, people were still left to their own voluntary efforts of where they wanted to worship, who they wanted to worship with."

Carson also talks about why many black men look at Christianity as a white man's religion. Interesting insight for sure.
