Who is Carolina Flores?

HOUSTON - Neighbors in the apartment complex where Carolina's body was found said they didn't know much about her or her family.

"We're all still trying to find out what happened. All we ever saw was two women living there. We never saw a child," Carolina's neighbor Dora Elia Reyes said.

Carolina Flores was stabbed to death by Erika Jisela Miranda-Alvarez on Tuesday morning, according to police.

Miranda-Alvarez was charged with capital murder for the crime on Thursday.

Authorities believe Miranda-Alvarez stabbed Flores to death and took her 6-week-old child, Shamali Flores.

After an exhaustive, two-day search by multiple agencies, Shamali was found with Miranda-Alvarez Thursday morning, nearly 30 miles away from the murder scene.

Shamali was taken to the hospital and found to be healthy. There were no signs of abuse or injury, according to police.

Carolina's family said she moved to the United States from Honduras about five years ago seeking a better life.

She was very kind, lovable. She was just a person that she was the light in the room. Oh, Carolina, and for this to happen is just -- I just wish it didn't happen," Jenny Lopez, a close cousin of Flores, said.

Along with Shamali, family members said Carolina has two other children, ages 7 and 17, and was also taking care of a teenage niece and nephew.

Child Protective Services officials told KPRC that Flores' two other children are in the care of family members, but the agency is involved.

"She had just had the baby. We had talked, she had just called me Sunday to check on me, and I could hear it in her voice that it wasn't her, but I didn't ask no questions. I didn't think anything was wrong," Lopez said.
