Supporters of Deputy Goforth wear Captain America shirts

HOUSTONBy: Allen Le/ Staff

Captain America has risen to be a symbol of honor and unity in remembrance of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth, who was shot and killed on Aug. 28 in Cypress.

People all across the Houston area wore T-shirts Friday that display Captain American's shield and posted pictures on their social media accounts in honor of the deputy. Houston residents and beyond have sent in photos of their family and friends with Captain America apparel using the hashtags #unitedwegoforth and #goforthamerica. Family pets have also been included in the participation.

A childhood friend of Goforth's, Lt. Rolando De Los Santos, spoke at his locally televised memorial service on Sept. 4 and explained how Goforth and his 5-year-old son, Ryan Goforth, purchased Captain American T-shirts to wear together. That opportunity never came, but Ryan was able to wear his shirt to his father's memorial service while Goforth had his shirt on under his uniform in his casket.

The story has resonated with people –- locally and nationally.

The deputy's death reached national headlines and contributed to the ongoing discussions on social media about law enforcement and the communities they serve.
