AUSTIN, Texas – A suspect has been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a bystander during a fight on a downtown Austin street involving 60 Hurricane Laura evacuees from the Gulf Coast, Austin police said Friday.

A police statement identified the suspect as Linton Wilson Alexander, 21, but gave no hometown. He was booked Thursday night into Travis County Jail without bond on a murder charge, jail records showed. No attorney is listed for the suspect.

Police say two groups of evacuees from Port Arthur and Beaumont brawled on a downtown Austin street about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Police say a man opened fire, fatally wounding a homeless female bystander.

Laura roared ashore Thursday as a Category 4 hurricane along the Louisiana-Texas border. Gov. Greg Abbott credited the evacuation of vulnerable Southeast Texas areas for saving Texas lives.
