Truck driver hit bicyclist from behind, left scene, Missouri City police say

Bicyclist remains hospitalized with head injury

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – A man on a bicycle was struck from behind and suffered head injuries, police said, in a crash that’s now considered a hit-and-run.

About 7 p.m. on Jan. 17, Joe Luna Jr. was riding in the 1600 block of Court Road in Missouri City, officers said. Luna was heading east in the main lane of traffic when an older-model Ford F-150 or F-250 hit him.

"He doesn't remember anything at all," said Francisco Tapia, Luna's brother.

The pickup truck was painted white and tan, with chrome running boards, according to a news release from officials in Missouri City.

After the driver struck Luna, causing him to land in the road, witnesses said the driver stopped, and an occupant was seen getting out of the truck and approaching Luna, investigators said.

The suspect truck remained at the scene of the crash for a short time; however, the driver did not provide any identifying information.

"It's traumatizing," Tapia said, adding his brother was riding his bicycle to a bank to deposit money in order to pay his bills.

"He wants this person caught," Tapia continued.

Luna had to undergo surgery to relieve a swollen brain. One of his legs was broken and he is having trouble relearning how to walk, his family said.

"He has a lot of staples in his head. They took half the skull off to make sure the brain didn't over-swell, because of it did he would die," Tapia said.

Witnesses described the driver as a man about 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a mustache. He wore a ball cap and winter-type jacket, police said.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help in identifying the truck or the driver.

Luna remains in intensive care at a hospital.
