METRO offers free rides to Houston-area students

HOUSTON – METRO is offering free rides to all Houston-area students through the end of September, transit officials said Friday.

Due to the fact that many families have been left with limited options for transportation, along with disrupted schedules, following Hurricane Harvey, METRO decided to open up complimentary rides through Sept. 30, according to a news release.

Parents who need to accompany their children to school can also ride without charge.

The promotion applies to students in kindergarten through college. High school and university students must present a student ID before boarding.

"The road to recovery is a long one for so many people in our community,” METRO Chair Carrin Patman said. “We hope the free rides will remove some stress for parents and students as they return to school.”

Nearly all of the routes are running again, following the devastating storm. A handful of routes remain detoured, abbreviated or combined, due to lingering high water, METRO officials said.

More buses are being used, to satisfy high ridership demands.
