Man shot, killed inside home after walking in on burglary, deputies say

Deputies: Victim received call to check on home, because alarm had gone off

KATY, Texas – A man was shot dead inside his home in the Katy area after he walked in on a burglary, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

It happened at a home on the 19900 block of Upland Creek Drive at around 2:40 p.m. Friday.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the victim, Devonte Hardison, 21, got a call from his mother to go check on their home, because the burglar alarm had gone off.

"When he came over to check on the house, he possibly interrupted a burglary in progress and was shot and killed," said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Luis Guerrero said he was coming home from school when he heard there was a shooting at Hardison's house across the street.

"I just got goosebumps. That's scary knowing that your neighbor just died," said Luis Guerrero. "Ten minutes later, a lot of cops pulled up and then the fire truck in front of my house."

Guerrero told KPRC 2 he went to high school with Hardison.

"His aunt that was here, she came up to me, saying if I had seen anything, because the nephew had just gotten shot, and they were all crying," said Guerrero. "He was a chill guy. He seemed really cool."

Investigators are trying to track the suspects down, but do not have a description for them.
