HOUSTON – CenterPoint Energy is investigating a cybersecurity incident involving the personal information of some of its customers, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company said it became aware of an online post in September claiming that a third party had obtained a dataset containing customer information. CenterPoint activated its cybersecurity response protocols and launched an investigation with outside experts.

The investigation determined that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information belonging to a portion of CenterPoint’s customers through an external-facing system.
CenterPoint has not disclosed how many customers were affected or what types of personal information were obtained. The company said it is still working to determine the scope of the breach and plans to notify affected customers as required by law.
The incident has been reported to law enforcement, and certain regulatory agencies have also been notified.
CenterPoint said its electric and natural gas services have not been disrupted. The company does not currently expect the incident to have a material impact on its finances or operations.
KPRC 2 has contacted CenterPoint for additional information. A spokesperson told us, “our filing speaks for itself.”
