Investigators said the man, who lived at the hotel with family members, was in a hallway on the top floor when he exchanged words with two men who were walking past and preparing to leave.
During the argument, one of the men fired at least two shots, striking the victim multiple times in the torso.
The man collapsed near the threshold of his apartment and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both men ran from the hotel after the shooting. Tactical officers searched the area for the suspects. No weapons were recovered at the scene.
Investigators initially believed the men could still be somewhere at the hotel complex, but later determined that appeared unlikely.
The victim and the two men being sought were described by police as Black. No suspect descriptions beyond their approximate ages were immediately available.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Houston police.
