HOUSTON – When 2 Helps You first visited the neighborhood of Forrest Pines in May, residents had one simple question: What happened to the speed bumps the City of Houston promised nearly 10 years ago?
For years, neighbors said drivers regularly used their streets as a shortcut, speeding through the neighborhood to avoid the traffic light on Antoine Drive.
“It’s ridiculous. Totally crazy,” one resident told us during our original report.
After that story aired, Houston Public Works said the project would finally move forward before the end of the year.
“They are going to get this stuff before the end of the year,” Houston Public Works Director Randy Macchi said at the time.
Now, that promise is becoming reality.
Fresh orange paint now marks the locations where new speed bumps will be installed throughout the neighborhood.
“Look at all this paint,” 2 Helps You said while walking the street with longtime resident John Richardson, “It’s going to be a speed bump, finally,” Richardson said adding, “After ten years.”
Residents say the speed bumps can’t come soon enough.
“They’re not casually driving through, they’re speeding through,” Richardson said.
For many neighbors, seeing construction finally begin is something they never thought would happen.
“To be honest, until your segment on speed bumps, I didn’t think it was ever going to happen,” said resident Darian Hewitt who added, “2 Helps you cares and we appreciate it. I’ve been knocking on doors and I didn’t get anything until I got a hold of Mario Diaz.”
