A woman was killed after being hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross Highway 249 Thursday night, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened around 10:32 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 249 and Old Bammel North Houston Road.
Investigators said a Cadillac sedan was traveling southbound on Highway 249 when the driver passed through the intersection and hit a woman who was running eastbound across the roadway.
According to deputies, the woman was not in a marked crosswalk when she was hit. Emergency crews transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities said the driver initially left the scene but later returned. Investigators determined the driver had a green light at the time of the crash and that the traffic signals were functioning properly.
The driver showed no signs of intoxication and was released. No charges have been filed.
The identity of the woman has not been released. Investigators said it is unclear whether she was unhoused.
While deputies were investigating the fatal crash, a separate incident occurred at the scene involving a Harris County deputy.
According to the sheriff’s office, a Nissan sedan was making a right turn at the intersection when it hit the deputy. The deputy was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the Nissan was arrested on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. Authorities said the driver was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
