2 Helps You: Man walks from Houston to San Antonio, then comes back to give away nearly 100 pairs of shoes to Katy kids

A Houston man pushed a wagon across Texas — generator, food, water and all — and passed out from the heat along the way. But he finished. And the kids in Katy are better for it.

KATY, Texas – Andrew Zamarippas called it the I-10 Iron Kids Walk — a trek from Houston to San Antonio to raise money for shoe giveaways for little league kids in both cities.

He shared his story with 2 Helps You as to how he pushed a wagon the entire way, carrying a generator to charge his phone, food, and water. He collapsed from dehydration in Seguin before finishing the journey.

When Zamarippas showed up at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Katy, corporate skepticism quickly turned into cooperation. “They’re like — What? Are you serious? Who are you? But yet you’re here?” Zamarippas said with a laugh. “I’m here, I’m here.”

Nearly 100 kids walked out of that Dick’s on Friday with a free pair of shoes. “This is what touches my heart,” Zamarippas said, realizing the impact he is having on the community.

His message to every kid who laced up — “Keep doing good work in football, soccer, baseball, whatever ya’ll do. Respect ya’ll’s parents and keep looking forward in your career.”

His next move — another giveaway, in the near future.
