HOUSTON – If you’re heading to a concert, sporting event or entertainment district in Houston this summer, don’t be surprised if you notice more Texas Department of Public Safety troopers on patrol.

The Texas Department of Public Safety announced the launch of Operation Safe Summer, a statewide initiative aimed at increasing law enforcement visibility in high-traffic pedestrian areas across Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth.

The effort comes as Texas prepares for a busy summer tourism season and an influx of visitors attending major events across the state, including activities tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to DPS, troopers will be deployed to areas that typically attract large crowds, including stadiums, entertainment districts, concert venues and other popular gathering spots. The agency says the goal is to deter criminal activity and help ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy summer events.

“This summer is particularly special for Texas, as we welcome millions of visitors for a variety of events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” DPS Director Colonel Freeman F. Martin said in a statement. “Under Operation Safe Summer, DPS is proactively responding to the anticipated influx of tourists and crowds, offering support to our local law enforcement partners to ensure all events taking place this summer, and the areas around them, remain safe, secure and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike.”

Houston impact

Houston is expected to host numerous large-scale events this summer, drawing thousands of visitors to venues, restaurants and entertainment districts throughout the city.

The increased patrols could mean:

  • More law enforcement presence around major event venues.
  • Faster response times in crowded areas.
  • Additional traffic and pedestrian safety enforcement.
  • Increased efforts to deter thefts, assaults and other crimes that can occur in densely populated entertainment districts.

DPS said the operation will be conducted in partnership with local police departments, with patrol levels adjusted based on crowd sizes, event schedules and public safety needs.

Officials say the initiative is designed to supplement local law enforcement resources and help maintain safety in areas expected to see the highest concentration of visitors throughout the summer.

Operation Safe Summer will continue throughout the busy travel and event season, with troopers focusing on keeping high-traffic corridors safe and orderly for both Texans and tourists.
