HOUSTON – With excitement building for the FIFA World Cup 2026, many Houston-area fans are experiencing sticker shock when it comes to ticket prices.

So why are tickets in the U.S., and in Houston, expected to cost more than in past host countries?

1. High demand in a major U.S. market

Houston is one of the largest and most diverse cities in the country, with a strong soccer fan base. Add in international visitors traveling for the tournament, and demand quickly outpaces supply, driving prices up.

2. Larger, higher-revenue venues

Matches in Houston will be played at NRG Stadium, a modern NFL venue with premium seating options. These stadiums are designed to maximize revenue through suites, club seats and VIP experiences, which can push overall ticket prices higher.

3. Dynamic pricing and resale markets

Unlike past tournaments, ticket pricing now often fluctuates based on demand. Resale platforms also play a major role, where tickets can be marked up significantly, sometimes far beyond face value.

4. Corporate and sponsor allocations

A large portion of tickets are reserved for sponsors, corporate partners and hospitality packages. Those packages, which can include luxury seating and exclusive access, are typically priced at a premium, raising the overall average cost.

5. U.S. sports pricing trends

Compared to many countries, attending live sports in the U.S. is already more expensive. Events like the Super Bowl and NBA Finals regularly command high ticket prices, and the World Cup is expected to follow that trend.

6. Travel destination factor

For many international fans, attending a World Cup in the U.S. is a once-in-a-lifetime trip. That willingness to spend more on the experience, including tickets, contributes to higher prices overall.

While official ticket prices will vary depending on the match and seating, the combination of demand, venue type and market dynamics means Houston fans may end up paying significantly more than fans did in previous World Cups.
