Expect road closures, heavy traffic in Houston this weekend with Astros Opening Day, Sweet 16 and Houston Open

Drivers should prepare for a busy weekend across Houston, especially in the downtown area, as several major events are expected to bring road closures and heavy traffic.

From Astros Opening Day to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and the Texas Children’s Houston Open, thousands of people are expected to travel through downtown Houston and Memorial Park starting Friday.

The Houston Astros kick off their season Thursday afternoon at Daikin Park with a 3:10 p.m. game against the Los Angeles Angels. The four-game series runs through the weekend, and drivers should expect congestion around the stadium before and after each game.

Road closures are expected near the ballpark, including areas along Texas Avenue, Crawford Street, Congress Street, Hamilton Street, and Avenida de las Americas.

Downtown will also be busy because the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 games will be held at the Toyota Center. The first game Thursday is scheduled for 6:39 p.m., followed by a matchup featuring the University of Houston at 9:05 p.m. Another game will be played Saturday as part of the Elite Eight.

Officials say lane closures are expected near the arena, including along Bell Street and Polk Street.

Meanwhile, the Texas Children’s Houston Open begins Thursday at Memorial Park, bringing additional traffic to the area throughout the weekend. Drivers should expect closures along Memorial Loop Drive, West Memorial Loop Drive, East Memorial Loop Drive, and Arnot Street between Wescott Street and East Memorial Loop Drive.

With multiple large events happening at the same time, officials are urging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for crowded roads throughout the weekend.

Residents heading downtown or near Memorial Park should expect delays, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
