A man is in critical condition after police say he forced his way into a home in southwest Houston and was shot by the homeowner.
Investigators say what led up to that moment is still unclear.
Officers with the Houston Police Department were called to the 4800 block of Ingomar Way for a shooting.
Investigators say two men were seen running through the neighborhood.
One of them, described as a man in his 20s, had blood on his head.
Police say they are still trying to determine if he had been shot, assaulted, or injured in another way before arriving in the area.
That man then began going door to door, knocking and trying to get help.
Police say he eventually made his way to a home on the block, where he continued banging on the door before forcing his way inside.
That is when the homeowner shot him multiple times.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital and is in critical condition.
The second man, described as wearing a black hoodie, jumpsuit, and mask, ran away and has not been located.
Police say this case has two parts they are working to piece together.
First, what happened to the injured man before he entered the neighborhood?
Second, who the other person is and what role he may have played.
“Either he was shot or hit in the head with something or assaulted or something, but he had blood on his head. He went to several doors knocking,” said HPD Lt. J.P. Harlicka.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen what happened earlier or has surveillance video from the area to come forward.
People who live in the neighborhood say this kind of incident is not something they typically see.
One neighbor told KPRC 2 the area is usually quiet, with many longtime residents who look out for each other.
“I don’t understand why whatever happened,” said neighbor Gerald Conkright.
Residents say the situation has left them with more questions than answers, especially about what led the injured man to their street.
Police say the homeowner is not an officer and the case may involve self-defense, but that determination is still under investigation.
Anyone with information, including video from doorbell or security cameras, is urged to contact the Houston Police Department Major Assaults Division or Crime Stoppers.
