The fire happened in the 900 block of County Road 281.
Multiple departments responded to the scene, including Alvin Fire & EMS, Friendswood, Pearland, Brazoria County, and the Santa Fe Fire Departments.
The City of Alvin said smoke was visible for miles.
The Alvin Volunteer Fire Department said hundreds of large plastic drums burned at the property.
“This business stores thousands of recycled 250-gallon plastic totes and drums used for chemical refurbishment. The large fuel load contributed to rapid fire growth and heavy smoke conditions,” Alvin VFD said.
The fire has been brought under control after crews used an estimated 10,000 gallons of water. Firefighters remain on scene to monitor and extinguish hot spots.
Alvin VFD said a nearby home on the property sustained damage due to the extreme heat, but no one was hurt.
County Road 281 will remain closed while investigations are underway but is expected to reopen later this evening.
