HOUSTON – As the Houston ISD moves closer to a final decision on the potential closure of 12 campuses, one key date now stands out for hundreds of educators across the district: April 17.

That’s when teachers at schools slated for closure will be notified whether they will have positions for the 2026–2027 school year at the designated receiving campuses.

What happens on April 17?

According to district officials, certified and contracted teachers in good standing will learn whether they have been selected to move directly to one of the schools absorbing students from closing campuses.

“All certified and contracted teachers in good standing will have a teaching position with HISD during the 26-27 school year,” a district spokesperson told KPRC 2’s Rilwan Balogun. “Those not selected for a position at a receiving school will be placed at a different school after considering the teacher’s placement preferences.”

However, not all educators will necessarily be placed at the receiving schools.

Teachers who are not selected for a position at those campuses will be reassigned to a different HISD school. District leaders say those placements will take teacher preferences into account.

While April 17 marks the first major notification milestone, staffing decisions will continue throughout the spring.

HISD says placements will occur on a rolling basis until all impacted certified and contracted teachers in good standing have been assigned to a campus for next school year.

As the board of managers prepares to vote on the proposed closures, April 17 now serves as a checkpoint in the transition process for affected school communities.
