HOUSTON, Texas – Drivers of certain Ford Explorer SUVs may soon be getting recall notices in the mail.

Ford Motor Company has announced a recall of more than 400,000 Ford Explorer vehicles from model years 2017 through 2019 due to a potential issue involving the rear suspension.

According to federal safety officials, a rear suspension toe link could fracture. If that happens, it may affect the vehicle’s alignment and steering, increasing the risk of a crash. In some cases, drivers could notice unusual handling, uneven tire wear, or the vehicle pulling to one side.

The recall was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which oversees vehicle safety investigations and recalls in the United States.

Ford says dealers will inspect the affected SUVs and replace the rear toe links with updated components at no cost to owners. Notification letters are expected to be mailed to customers in the coming weeks.

Drivers who own a 2017, 2018, or 2019 Explorer can check whether their SUV is included in the recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or contacting a local Ford dealership.

Automakers issue recalls when a defect is found that could compromise safety, even if only a small percentage of vehicles are expected to experience the problem. Owners are encouraged to schedule repairs as soon as they are notified to ensure their vehicle remains safe to drive.
