Todd Stevens (Chambers County Sheriff's Office)

A truck matching the vehicle description was later found burning underneath the Trinity River bridge in Chambers County with a body inside.

The sheriff’s office says deputies were dispatched to the bridge just after 10 p.m. Sunday night. They found a truck on fire underneath the bridge on the west bank of the river. Once the fire was extinguished, human remains were found inside.

As deputies were investigating the death, they found a social media post from the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office which referenced a shooting which occurred earlier on Sunday in the county.

The post alleged Todd Stevens, 36, of Bronson, shot Cody Thompson, 43. of Burkeville. Stevens then allegedly fled in Thompson’s vehicle, described as a 1990s model Chevrolet extended cab pickup. The description matched that of the burning truck found under the Trinity River bridge.

“At this time, the identity of the deceased individual from the truck has not been confirmed. The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office is actively coordinating with the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office as their investigation into the reported shooting and search for Todd Stevens remains ongoing. Todd Stevens has active felony warrants for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon related to the shooting of Thompson, with the potential for upgraded charges as the investigation continues. Stevens will also face charges in Chambers County,” the sheriff’s office said.

Anyone with any information on Todd Stevens whereabouts is asked to call the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office or the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.
