HOUSTON – Drivers heading toward the Southwest Freeway at SH-288 on Monday morning should plan for major delays as several lanes remain closed after hay bales spilled across the roadway overnight.
According to Houston police, just after midnight, an oversized truck carrying hay bales struck an overpass, causing the load to fall onto the highway.
Crews shut down the freeway to oncoming traffic to clear the debris. However, around 3 a.m., police said a suspected drunk driver drove past the barricades and crashed into a patrol vehicle.
The officer involved suffered minor injuries.
The freeway is expected to remain closed for several hours as crews continue cleanup efforts.
