Suspect surrenders peacefully to Galveston County deputies

SAN LEON, Texas – Law enforcement in Galveston County were at a San Leon home on Friday night where a wanted suspect had barricaded himself inside.

Gary Cooper, 41, was taken into custody on two felony warrants for aggravated assault and robbery.

Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen says deputies were at Cooper’s home to serve a warrant near the intersection of 18th Street and Bayshore Drive, but he refused to exit and was believed to be armed.

Law enforcement said negotiations with Cooper began around 1 p.m. SWAT was called to the scene.

Cooper peacefully surrendered to law enforcement around 8 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

No injuries were reported to officers of the public.

KPRC 2 was at the scene and captured video of a man in handcuffs being loaded into the back of a deputy’s vehicle. It is unclear if the man in the video is Cooper.

KPRC 2 has reached out to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office to try and get more information.
