56-year-old man dies in custody at Harris County Jail 4 days after suffering medical emergency

HOUSTON – A 56-year-old man in custody at the Harris County Jail died at a hospital, four days after suffering a medical emergency at the jail.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says Anthony Delarosa, 56, died at HCA Clear Lake Hospital on Saturday.

The sheriff’s office said Delarosa had been in custody at the jail for 19 days after being arrested on a charge of injury to an elderly person.

Delarosa had been taken the the hospital on Jan. 20 after suffering the medical emergency.

ā€œDelarosa’s death has been reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The Texas Rangers are investigating the death in accordance with a state law that requires all jail deaths to be investigated by an outside law enforcement agency. The Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division is also investigating to determine whether all applicable policies and procedures were followed, which is standard following the death of a person in jail. Delarosa’s cause of death will be determined by an autopsy conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences,ā€ the sheriff’s office said.
