An off-duty Harris County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the hand while sleeping after a 3-year-old child gained access to a firearm inside a Spring home.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office deputies responded to the 20200 block of Woodsboro Court.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales shared on Facebook that the man was being treated at a hospital for a non-life-threatening injury he suffered at around noon. He stated that preliminary indications are that the shooting was unintentional.

Emergency medical personnel evaluated the off-duty deputy at the scene.

Officials have not provided additional details about how the child accessed the firearm or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Residents are being urged to avoid the area while investigators continue to process the scene.

This is a developing story. KPRC 2’s Gage Goulding is headed to the scene.
