HOUSTON – Winter weather is coming to Houston this weekend, and not only is it bringing low temperatures, but freezing rain as well.

In response, the City of Houston says it will open 12 warming centers for those in need. More local governments are also opening shelters, too.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said nine of the warming centers will have generators and will be open for 24 hours. He said all residents are welcomed, regardless of immigration status, “no questions asked.”

The warming centers will not only provide warm shelter but food, bedding and blankets. If you do not have a ride to a warming center, Whitmire said Houston METRO will provide.

He said 25 state troopers will be on standby for possible power outages if needing to step in.

Whitmire emphasized that all residents need to be where they will be for the next 72 hours beginning midnight Sunday.

He also reiterated the importance of protecting people, plants, pipes, and pets.

“Protect your pets. They are Houstonians for the next 72 hours.”

The mayor said DPS will be on the lookout of pet abuse, including horses, by leaving animals out in freezing temperatures.
