HOUSTON, Texas – A man is dead after a shooting at a Houston park on Tuesday night, and investigators with the Houston Police Department believe the shooting may have stemmed from an attempted robbery.
Houston police were called to Riverside Park on South Calumet, on the city’s south side, just before 9 p.m. Officers arrived to find a 42-year-old man shot in the torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, the man had met a female friend at the park and was sitting with her inside her car when two masked men approached them, both armed with guns. Police say the suspects ordered them out of the vehicle.
When the suspects were unable to drive away because the keys were missing, officers say they chased the man and woman through the park.
Investigators believe the suspects caught up with the man in a grassy area, where a struggle broke out. During that confrontation, the man was shot.
The woman was able to escape and ran to a nearby convenience store, where she called 911. She told police she heard a gunshot as she was running away.
Police are still searching for the two suspects involved in the shooting.
Riverside Park is typically a popular park, and investigators say they are continuing to look into what happened, including whether patrols in the area will be increased.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Houston police or Crime Stoppers.
