For the first time since a student was stabbed to death at Sterling High School, Goose Creek CISD school board members are set to meet Tuesday night, a meeting that also marks the first for the district’s new superintendent.
The school board meeting comes weeks after 16-year-old Andrew Meismer was killed during a fight inside an empty classroom at the Baytown campus.
Prosecutors say 18-year-old Aundre Matthews stabbed Meismer in the neck with a pair of scissors during an argument over a missing $21 THC vape pen.
Matthews is charged with murder and remains in jail without bond.
Investigators say the stabbing happened on Dec. 17. Court records indicate Matthews told police he acted in self-defense, claiming the victim was “much bigger” than him.
Dr. Joe Rodriguez, who was appointed superintendent last month, took on the role around the same time the deadly stabbing shook the school community.
Since the incident, parents and students have voiced frustration and concern, saying the district failed to prevent the tragedy. Some have claimed Matthews had a history of disciplinary issues and should not have been allowed on campus.
In the weeks following the stabbing, students and parents protested outside the school and held a town hall meeting, calling for stricter safety measures and more transparency in disciplinary policies.
The Goose Creek CISD school board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the district’s administration building in Baytown.
KPRC 2 will be inside the meeting and provide updates as they become available.
