Travelers who arrive at airport security checkpoints without a REAL ID or other acceptable identification will soon have a new option to fly, but it will come at a cost.

The program, called TSA ConfirmID, gives passengers who arrive at airport checkpoints without compliant identification the ability to complete an alternative identity verification process. TSA officials say the fee is designed to ensure that travelers without acceptable IDs, rather than taxpayers, cover the additional cost of screening.

TSA warns that travelers using ConfirmID should expect additional screening measures and possible delays of up to 30 minutes. Passengers who arrive at the checkpoint without acceptable identification and have not paid the fee in advance may face longer delays or risk missing their flight.

“TSA ConfirmID will be an option for travelers that do not bring a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID to the TSA checkpoint and still want to fly,” said Adam Stahl, a senior TSA official. He encouraged travelers to obtain a REAL ID or other approved identification to avoid delays or missed flights.

More information about REAL ID and TSA ConfirmID is available at TSA.gov or by contacting the TSA Help Center.
