Scholarship surprise puts yearbook photo editor Giao Tran into spotlight at Kerr High School

Tran is the second recipient of the KPRC 2-American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship from the Class of 2026

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with $2,500 scholarships in 2026. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

Giao Tran is our second KPRC 2-American Furniture Warehouse Senior Scholarship winner of the year. She is ranked near the top of her graduating class at Kerr High School which is part of the Alief Independent School District.

Tran’s commitment to helping younger students sets her apart from her peers. She leads a group called Kerr Pals, where she visits elementary schools weekly to mentor children. The program helps build confidence and expand children’s learning possibilities. She also pairs high school underclassmen with mentors to help students transition smoothly in the high school environment. “Through leadership and mentorship, I’m committed to creating welcoming environments to support, guide, and uplift others throughout my school and community,” Tran told KPRC 2.

Among Tran’s many other activities, she’s involved with National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. She also serves as a board member of the Red Collective Envelope initiative that shares Asian heritage and serves the community through supply drives and more. She balances everything while working part-time to help her family cover expenses.

Tran plans to study biochemistry in college. Congratulations, Giao!
