HOUSTON – If you drive one of these vehicles, you may be at higher risk of becoming a target for car thieves.

Harris County Precinct 4 has released new data identifying the most frequently stolen vehicles in the Houston area, with trucks and popular commuter cars topping the list.

Most stolen vehicles in the Houston area:

1. Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2. GMC Sierra 1500

3. Ford F150

4. Toyota Corolla

5. Hyundai Elantra

According to Precinct 4, these vehicles are often targeted because they are relatively quick to steal, easy to disguise or resell, and, in the case of trucks, frequently contain valuable tools or accessories.

However, law enforcement says simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of theft.

Tips to protect your vehicle, according to Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman:

• Never leave your keys or key fob inside your vehicle; many thefts happen in seconds.
• Always lock your doors and roll up your windows, even during short stops.
• Use anti-theft devices such as steering wheel locks, brake locks, GPS trackers, or kill switches.
• Park in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible.
• Install exterior cameras and aim them toward your driveway or parking area.

Officials urge drivers to stay vigilant and take preventive measures, especially if they own one of the vehicles most commonly targeted by thieves.
