Hundreds protest ICE in Galleria after fatal shooting of woman in Minnesota

HOUSTON – Hundreds of people gathered near Post Oak and Westheimer in the Galleria-area of Houston Thursday night to protest against ICE after the fatal shooting of a woman in Minnesota.

The protestors called for justice for Renee Good.

Protestor, Darlene McKeever, criticized ICE’s handling of the situation. “I think what happened recently yesterday in Minneapolis is horrible and I think that ICE is out of control and they’re not being managed well and they are not being trained properly.”

“We’re just here doing what we can to kind of spread awareness, to let people know that this is wrong. It’s been wrong. They want us to kind of go away. They want to be silent about it, but we can’t do that,” said a protestor named Richard.

The protests come after Good was fatally shot by an ICE agent on Wednesday. Video of the shooting has created a divide with protestors saying the shooting wasn’t justified, while federal authorities are siding with ICE, saying the shooting was self-defense.

“We live in an age where there’s cameras everywhere and these types of things are being captured on camera. You know these kinds of incidents, situations have happened before, plenty of times to where they weren’t recorded, weren’t documented. But now we’re living in a time where these types agencies are feeling so emboldened to commit these kinds of things,” Richard said.

Houston Police remained on standby for Thursday’s protest, but it remained peaceful.
