Houston-area midwife accused in abortion case missed payments for court-ordered GPS monitor

Waller – The Houston-area midwife facing charges for performing abortion and practicing medicine without a license in a historic Texas case has missed payments for a court-ordered GPS monitor, KPRC 2 learned in Waller County District Court on Wednesday.

"These devices aren’t cheap," said Rojas’ defense attorney Nicole DeBorde Hochglaube. “You’re looking at a $300 a month payment in many cases as in this one. It’s hard while you’re being faced with charges for a criminal case that you, a crime you didn’t commit, to find employment and to do work and she has bills to pay including $300 dollars a month for a monitor.”

Maria Rojas is facing 12 counts of practicing medicine without a license and three counts of performing abortion. She has been out on bond since April 2025.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office announced the first-of-its-kind case in March 2025.

Rojas was indicted on 15 counts in June 2025.

On Wednesday, a prosecutor from the Attorney General’s Office and Deborde Hochglaube appeared before Waller County District Court Judge Gary Chaney.

"We’ve received terabytes of documents, however, none of the information that we’ve received so far is instructive as to how we could ultimately reach a jury trial on these issues," said Deborde Hochglaube. “The material we’ve receive so far doesn’t, in our opinion, add up. Ms. Rojas is not guilty of any crime.”

The next court date is June 3.

KPRC 2 has emailed the AG’s Office multiple times in the past year for comment on this case, but hasn’t heard back.

“I’m not at liberty personally to speak about it,” said the prosecutor to KPRC 2.
