Mother claims ‘self-defense’ after shooting man while trying to protect her teenage son during fight in N. Harris Co.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – What began as a fight between several teenagers escalated into a shooting hours later in north Harris County, and investigators are now working to determine whether the shooting was self-defense.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident at an apartment complex located at 15414 Kuykendahl, near Cypress Landing Drive, Monday evening.

Deputies say the initial incident happened around 6:30 p.m., when multiple teens were involved in a fight. One mother stepped in and broke it up.

About two hours later, deputies say another mother, connected to a different teen involved in the earlier fight, returned to the scene to discuss what happened. During that interaction, a man in his 20s showed up and caused a disturbance.

Investigators say the mother, who was already at the scene, feared for her son’s safety, pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, striking the man.

The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Deputies say he was part of the earlier altercation and may have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the shooting.

A person of interest is now in custody as detectives continue interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence.

The key question for investigators is whether the shooting meets Texas’s legal standard for self-defense. The investigation remains ongoing.
