Harris County Sheriff’s Office says no threat to public, ship channel remains open

CHANNELVIEW, Texas – Authorities are responding to a chemical spill Saturday morning in an industrial area of Channelview.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the spill is at a plant facility around 16300 Jacintoport Boulevard. The call came in around 2:40 a.m. according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies are working on traffic control while hazmat teams and the Channelview Fire Department respond to the spill scene.

Authorities said a catwalk fell and created a sulfuric acid leak.

HCSO Major Joseph Blenderman said two people were taken to the hospital for respiratory issues. A triage has been set up to vet around 38 others off two vessels.

Authorities said the leak is contained.

The ship channel remains open and there is no threat to the public.
