Mother charged a year after baby found unresponsive in bathtub dies in NE Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A year after a 1-year-old girl died after being found unresponsive in a bathtub in northeast Harris County, the child’s mother has been charged.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says Leah Rebekah Hernandez, 30, is charged with injury to a child. She was taken into custody on Tuesday.

The incident happened on Aug. 24, 2024 at a home in the 7500 block of Welsh Stone Lane. Deputies responded to the home after the 1-year-old, identified as Anaiyah Hernandez, was found unresponsive in the bathtub by her mother.

CPR was administered and the child was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
