Holiday shopping season: How to protect yourself from thieves

HOUSTON – The holiday shopping season brings crowded stores, full hands, and, according to police, an increase in thefts fueled by distraction.

KPRC 2’s Ricky Muñoz was live at Memorial City Mall, where police say the calm seen early in the morning doesn’t last long. As the day goes on, crowds grow, shoppers juggle bags and phones, and awareness often drops, creating opportunities for thieves.

Deputies warn that holiday thefts often happen quickly in crowded spaces.

Surveillance video shows suspects watching shoppers who are focused on their purchases or devices. Police say thieves may get close, grab an item, and disappear into the crowd within seconds. Distraction, they say, is what criminals rely on most.

Authorities urge shoppers to take simple precautions: keep personal items hidden, lock vehicles every time, and stay aware of your surroundings. Police say looking up and paying attention to who is around you can make a significant difference.

If you do become a victim, police stress not to chase the suspect. Your safety is more important than any item taken. Instead, move to a safe location and report the theft immediately, including where it happened, what was taken, and the direction the suspect went.

Police say the best defense during the busy holiday season is awareness, slow down, look up, and stay alert.
