The Houston Police Department released body-worn camera footage on Monday from a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred last month at a downtown business.

The shooting happened after a man who was having a mental health episode escalated an interaction with authorities and slashed an officer with a knife.

According to HPD, the incident happened on Nov. 23 at approximately 7:48 p.m. when two Houston police officers were inside a business on Milam Street.

Police said a man approached the officers asking for help, claiming to have left his milk and cereal on the bus.

Officers asked the man to step outside the business to continue the conversation, police said.

In the released footage, the man appeared disturbed and possibly intoxicated, repeating phrases like “I’m freaking out, bro.”

During the interaction, the man became agitated when the officers asked him to put his bags down. The man began shouting in paranoia, saying he believed the officers were going to shoot him.

The officers tried to calm him down, but he continued yelling and threatening the officers, saying “you’re going to have to kill me tonight.”

The situation escalated as officers attempted to get control of the man, and a struggle broke out.

At some point as officers were wrestling the man, gunfire broke out. Officers quickly got up and indicated that the man had been shot.

One of the officers was bleeding heavily after being cut by the man and suffering a large laceration to the head.

Paramedics were called to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

The injured officer was transported to a hospital for treatment and was later released.

The case remains under investigation as additional evidence is reviewed.
