HOUSTON – Houston firefighters spent more than half an hour extinguishing a blaze early Monday at a vacant property near Griggs Road and Stratton Street, a location that has seen at least one previous fire in 2024, authorities said.

Houston Fire Department crews were dispatched around 12:40 a.m. for a reported outside fire. When the first engine arrived, firefighters found an exterior fire burning on a corner lot. A second engine was called in as crews began attacking the flames.
About 15 minutes into the response, HFD upgraded the incident to a full first-alarm assignment after the fire spread to a structure on the property. It took firefighters roughly 30 to 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Investigators have not determined what caused the latest blaze, but officials noted the area is known to attract squatters and said it’s possible the fire may have been started as a warming fire. That has not been confirmed.
No injuries were reported, and the district chief declined to speak on camera.
Arson investigators are handling the case.
